OU's mile relay team qualifies for nationals
by   |  December 4, 1995  |

Former OU star Jason Rouser outlegged senior sprinter Danny McFarlane in the final leg of the mile relay at the All Comers' Meet, Saturday inside the Sooners' Mosier Indoor Facility.

It was the final event of the meet, in which the Sooners provisionally qualified for the indoor national championships in three events and automatically qualified in the mile relay.

Rouser participated unattached and narrowly defeated McFarlane in the men's 600 meters. Sooner junior Ryan Kite finished a close third.

In the mile relay, the unattached team, including Rouser and former Sooner David Oaks, came from behind in the second half of the race. Rouser finished off the comeback by edging McFarlane down the stretch.

Despite the loss, the Sooner mile relay team automatically qualified for nationals on March 8-9 in Indianapolis.

Roxbert Martin, Kite, Justin Chapman and McFarlane combined for a time of 3:09.07.

Head Coach J.D. Martin said the mile relay squad is well ahead of last year's team.

Sophomore Terry Blackshire provisionally qualified in the 55-meter hurdles (7.306) and the 55-meter dash (6.29).

In addition, junior Jerome Douglas provisionally qualified for nationals in the triple jump.

With a provisional qualification, Blackshire and Douglas have qualified to compete in Indianapolis, but if more athletes qualify with better marks, they may be left out.

"We had some that didn't run so well," Martin said. "But I'm still encouraged by the meet."

Other Sooners who won events were Aaron Tracy, men's shot put; Nils-Andre Oliveto, men's weight throw; LaWanda Dyson, women's 55-meter hurdles; and Donnette Brown, women's 55-meter dash.
